Help available for those needing accommodation
Temporary Accommodation Service (TAS) has been activated to support households displaced because of the severe weather event in the Tasman/Nelson regions.
They are currently working with local authorities to understand how many people have been displaced and have homes that will need to be repaired or rebuilt. TAS is now accepting registrations from displaced residents in the region who need assistance finding temporary accommodation. Residents can register with TAS by completing the online registration form on the TAS website or by phoning 0508 754 163.
Once registered, residents can expect to hear from TAS and if eligible for TAS, commercial property will be utilised in the first instance for those displaced.
TAS is not a free service, there is a cost for all temporary accommodation options. Both TAS and the household contribute to this cost, called a part-payment. Temporary accommodation is different to ‘shelter’ and ‘emergency accommodation’, which is provided for a short period by civil defence and emergency management agencies. Temporary accommodation is used for short to medium terms, providing households with accommodation while repairs are undertaken following a Civil Defence Emergency.
If you have been impacted and need assistance with insurance claims, TAS works alongside the New Zealand Claims Resolution Service (NZCRS) who provide free, independent advice and support as homeowners navigate the insurance process.
Homeowners who are impacted by this event should talk to their insurer in the first instance to lodge a claim. NZCRS encourages homeowners to also take photos of the damage caused. If homeowners have concerns about their claim or are unsure about next steps, they can contact NZCRS on 0508 624 327, email contact@nzcrs.govt.nz or register with them Register with the NZCRS | New Zealand Claims Resolution Service
